Popular in the Midwest in the early 1900s, prairie style house plans are comfortable yet dramatic, offering a unique style that has modern appeal. Emphasis for prairie style house plans focuses on horizontal lines and integration with the outdoor living space. The exterior facade is usually built with natural materials such as clapboard, brick or stone, and use a horizontal pattern with contrasting wood between stories. Typically, prairie style house plans are at least two floors of living space, laid out in a rectangle or an asymmetrical format like a T, an L or a Y shape. This allows open flow between the rooms, which are often divided by leaded glass. Other common characteristics include low pitched roofs with wide overhanging eaves, heavy columned wide porches and masonry piers. This keeps the house looking low to the ground, so as to blend in with the landscape.
